Chora village (the capital)

Chora is the capital of the island of Amorgos, located at a height of 400 m above sea level and surrounded by ancient windmills. It looks like a picturesque medieval mountain village and hides magnificent and hidden views, as well as a spectacular view of the Grand Bleu, to mention the famous film by Luc Besson, shot on this enchanting island.

It is certainly the most beautiful town on the island to live and explore, to discover the true essence of Greece.

The history of Chora

The village of Chora underwent Venetian domination in the XII century, traces of which can still be seen today, thanks to the Venetian Castle, called Kastro, which dominates the town from above. The church of Kera Leousa (Lady of Mercy) was built inside the ancient rock more than fifteen centuries ago!

Like many other Greek towns, Chora was also built on a hill, to defend itself from invasions by Saracen pirates who in the past invaded and plundered the Mediterranean islands.

What to do in Chora

Walking through the streets of Chora will be like walking in a daydream. Chora is the perfect example of a Greek village, built in the Cycladic style, with whitewashed houses and lime with blue doors, separated by windy alleys, small squares and white churches.

The Chora Castle was built in the XII century by the Venetian Lords, as a protection against invasions by Saracen pirates. It is 65 meters high and was fortified in 1207 by the brothers Ieremia and Gyzi. From here starts a labyrinth of white alleys that makes up the village. In Chora you can breathe the scent of bougainvilleas that sway on the terraces and on the lime walls that shine in the sunset light and the lights of the restaurants light up.

Continue your walk to the mills located on the hill overlooking the historic center, from here you can admire the great blue of the Aegean, it is only from here in fact, that you see the sea.

Among the intricate alleys of Chora you will also find a wide variety of delicious taverns, restaurants, shops and cafés, to take a relaxing break and refresh yourself.

Chora nightlife

Towards sunset when Chora begins to populate with tourists returning from the sea, find a panoramic point on the hill and admire the most beautiful sunset in Amorgos, with the classic windmills that will frame this incredible scenario.

You can then stop in Chora for an aperitif or dine in one of the typical restaurants, such as the TranzisToRaki or the Apospero which prepare tasty traditional Greek cuisine and more.

Chora in summer is young and lively, ideal for couples, families and friends. But don't imagine the frenzy of Mykonos. Amorgos is a small and enchanting Cycladic island, far from the confusion of mass tourism. There are few northern Europeans, most of the kids who populate the streets are mostly Greek.

In Chora you can eat well, spending little, and the background noise is always that of the island breeze, or some sweet Greek song. If you want, you can socialize until late at night, or just sip a cocktail before returning to the hotel. You can end the evening with a glass of rakomelo (a local grappa) in one of the bars that you will find in the hidden squares, or take a walk after dinner through the alleys of the center.
