Vlachérna monastery

The Vlachérna Monastery occupies almost entirely an islet located a few meters from the Kanоni peninsula and the Corfu international airport. The islet is connected to the shore by a stone pier and can be easily reached on foot.

Built in the 18th century, the Vlachérna Monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Vlahernon and functioned as a monastery until 1980. Today the small church is used for religious celebrations, while the monastery can be visited for free. Inside the courtyard, on the left you will also find a souvenir shop.

This small and characteristic white church, which seems to float on the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea, is the real symbol of the island of Corfu. In fact, it attracts thousands of tourists every year, who flock numerous especially at sunset, to take picturesque photographs taking advantage of the colors and spectacular shades.

You will find yourself in a suggestive place, completely surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the island and immersed in a mystical tranquility, which is interrupted only by the roar of the planes that land and take off right on the runway of the nearby airport.

How to get to the Vlachérna Monastery

It can be reached with a pleasant walk from the old town of Corfu which is about 4 km away, or by bus number 2a.

In addition to the Vlachérna Monastery

From the small port located near the monastery you can reach the islet of Pontikonissi in 5 minutes, a small green island completely covered with pine and cypress trees, where you can visit the Byzantine chapel of Christ Pantocrator, dating back to the XII century.

This wild and unspoiled islet, thanks to its charm and tranquility, was also much loved by Empress Elizabeth of Austria. Part of its charm is linked to mythology, according to which the islet of Pontikonissi is the ship of Ulysses transformed into stone by the god Poseidon.
