Chania

Beautiful beaches, rich historical and artistic heritage and beautiful landscapes. Here is described the region of Chania in a few simple words. Chania, the former capital of the island of Crete, is located on the northwest coast and is one of the most cheerful and lively destinations on Crete! There are so many stops that you can't miss and each of these will make you feel a different emotion, giving you a wealth of memories that you will surely be happy to bring you back from your vacation. Chania, so called in Italian, is also known as the Venice of the East, because thanks to Venetian rule it reached its maximum splendor and even today its presence in antiquity can be admired.

What to visit in Chania?
If you have come to the island of Crete and are intrigued by the history and specifically want to find out more about the origins of Chania, take the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum. This museum will give you the opportunity to learn more about the history and culture of the island of Crete. The building that houses it has undergone various transformations over the years. It was initially the church of San Francesco, built by the Venetians. Then it became a mosque due to Ottoman domination and over the years it also became a cinema hall and an ammunition depot. Up to what we see today, the Archaeological Museum. Inside you will be able to admire various finds that start from prehistory and reach up to the Roman period; step by step you will pass from one era to another and you will be pleasantly fascinated.

Another place you can't miss is the Venetian Harbor, built by the Venetians and full of restaurants and cafes. Here you will surely notice that the Italian imprint is definitely visible! In addition to the harbor itself here you can admire the Lighthouse, the symbol of the city of Chania. This imposing tower is also named "Egyptian lighthouse" for the reconstruction of the Egyptians in the nineteenth century. With its 21 meters it dominates the city Chania and puts in awe anyone who looks at it.

A monument of primary importance on the island of Crete and in particular here in Chania, is the Firkas Fortress, where you can find the Maritime Museum and a small outdoor theater. On 1 December 1913 the Greek flag was hoisted over the fortress, testifying to the independence of Crete conquered after more than 260 years of Turkish rule: a real achievement! The Maritime Museum housed in the stronghold exhibits a beautiful collection of maps and memorabilia related to Cretan maritime traditions.
If you want to walk among ancient stone buildings the Tabakaria is the perfect place. You will find yourself in narrow steep streets and steps leading to the sea. In this magical place you can eat in some romantic little restaurant by the sea, breathing an air of tranquility!

The other two museums that you should visit here in Chania, are: the Byzantine Museum, where you will learn about the depiction of Saint George killing the dragon and the collection of Saint Savior, two very valuable Byzantine figures. And the Nautical Museum which houses naval finds dating back to the Bronze Age and also modern instruments and models. Thus we can also note the development of the naval history of the island of Crete.

Is there anything you "absolutely" can't miss once you arrive in Chania? Of course! The fabulous sunset from the Venetian Port. Take a table in one of the many colorful cafes that line the harbor and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets that the island of Crete can give us! Chania is magical and before leaving, try the experience of getting lost in some alley that smells of flowers or maybe pass among the market stalls, to smell the scent of Mediterranean spices and fruits .... A tip for the ladies? Go shopping! Among the many shops you will certainly find something that you will want to take home as a souvenir for you and your loved ones. A holiday on the island of Crete certainly needs to be remembered!
