Eleftheria Square

Eleftheria Square

The Eleftheria Square (piazza della Libertà) in Kos Town is characterized by its buildings built after the colonization of the island of Kos by the Italians, who rebuilt the city after the 1933 earthquake that also destroyed this area of the city.

This rectangular square a few steps from Bar Street (with bars and night clubs) and from the main port is definitely very impressive: it is located right in the center of the capital of the island of Kos and is the starting point for exploring the archaeological sites in the open air that there are already a few steps away.

Start with a good coffee at Aegli Bar Restaurant, which leads right onto Eleftheria Square and then take a ride to the covered spice market right next door (I'm sure you'll find the right souvenir to take home with friends and family). As you enter you will be immersed in a cloud of intense aromas and spices of every color: saffron, oregano, thyme and many other spices to be discovered.

Right on the opposite side of the spice market, you will find the Archaeological Museum which we strongly recommend to visit.

From here, set off to discover the historic part of the island of Kos or venture out among the many alleys that flow into this square: you will find numerous shops, even rather curious and interesting.

The Eleftheria Square is a great starting point and definitely not to be missed if you pass by here!
