Skala village

Skala village

The village of Skala is the main tourist resort on the island, as well as the main port of Patmos. It is a charming traditional town, very quiet and uncrowded. This small town has never been stormed by mass tourism, intact most of the visitors to the town are used to prefer much more authentic atmospheres and little affected by tourism.

Skala in antiquity ..

Initially Skala was not a quiet place. The cause of its danger was due to the continuous incursions of pirates who came to plunder all the valuable goods. In the 19th century its tourism development began. It began becoming a commercial and maritime center and then improved with accommodation and tourist services, but still remaining a quiet place.

What can I find in Skala?

In the village of Skala you will find several taverns and restaurants on the seafront where you can taste the typical dishes of the island of Patmos, such as the excellent fresh fish. In the cafeterias, on the other hand, you can taste Greek coffee and get to know the local people, with whom maybe you can have a chat to get to know the daily life of the villagers. Inside the village instead you can take long walks admiring the narrow alleys characterized by traditional white houses.

Not just pretty alleys ...

In the village of Skala you can also admire numerous buildings, some more recent and some older. Among all those that we advise you not to miss are: the ruins of the ancient acropolis, the convent of Zoodochos Pighi and the two main churches, that of Aghia Paraskevi and Panaghia Cumana. Last but not least, we suggest you take advantage of your visit to Skala to get to know the pretty island of Petrokaravo, on this you can get there from the port of the village using a fishing boat.

A little curiosity

A particularity related to the village is its location; the village of Skala is located in a very small and narrow area of the island of Patmos, in fact, to get from the west to the east coast you have to travel only 700 meters at this point. Seeing is believing!

Skala beach

But obviously in Skala we cannot forget its splendid beach. It is located right next to the port of the island and it is a wide and long sandy bay, washed by a clear turquoise sea and enriched in some areas by green trees that make the landscape a little more tropical. Skala beach is excellent for families who have small children with them, thanks to its seabed which degrades very slowly. If you wish to go there, we inform you that, being the beach closest to the port, in the high season there is often a little crowd; for this reason we advise you to leave early in the morning, so that you can enjoy the scenery of the calm and chaos-free bay.

If you want to admire a splendid view, go to the port of Skala. If you are with your partner and want to enjoy a romantic evening, we recommend you book one of the taverns overlooking the harbor and watch the sun go down. Your partner will be more than satisfied with your choice!
