Acropolis of Lindos

Acropolis of Lindos

The acropolis of Lindos is the most interesting archaeological site on the island of Rhodes, and each year attracts visitors from all over the world.

It is located on the southern coast of the island of Rhodes, 56 km from the capital (Rhodes Town).

The acropolis of Lindos is situated on a hill overlooking the sea at a height of 116 meters. A truly picturesque place and needless to say ... with a breathtaking view!

To go up to the acropolis of Lindos you can choose between two options: the first on foot, taking the time to reach the top, perhaps losing yourself in the shops and the typical specialties hidden among the narrow streets of the city.

The second possibility, instead, is to go on the back of a docile donkey, just as happens on the island of Santorini.

In any case, to visit the acropolis of Lindos we advise you to wear comfortable shoes, a hat to protect yourself from the sun and to bring fresh water with you to cool off during the ascent. Once at the top you will still find a well stocked kiosk with cool drinks and snacks.

Your effort will be well rewarded by the beauty of the Acropolis of Lindos and the treasures that the island of Rhodes jealously preserves, like the Doric temple of Athena Lindia (from the 4th century BC), the castle of Lindos and the Church of Panagia, with white walls and a red roof, next to which rises an imposing stone bell tower. Without words he also leaves the vosta of the Bay of Saint Paul, visible in all its splendor, at a height of 170 meters.

The castle of Lindos was rebuilt by the Knights of Rhodes in the 14th century, who added the battlements surrounding the rock. At the top of the access ladder there is a relief depicting a ship on which rested the statue of Admiral Agesandro di Mikion, by Pitocrito, the same artist who made the famous Nike of Samothrace, exhibited at the Louvre museum. Inside there is a vast courtyard with three cisterns, the remains of a Byzantine church dedicated to St. John. Here are also some columns from the 3rd century BC which were part of the vast stoa, a 87-meter long colonnade composed of 42 columns, dating back to the Hellenistic period.

The narrow alleys of Lindos, where only pedestrians or at most cute donkeys can circulate retain all the charm of this ancient city. You will seem to be catapulted into a distant era. To keep this atmosphere intact, no structural changes can be made to the buildings of Lindos, many of which date back to the 15th century.

If after your visit you were a little hungry, you will find the Lov'eat in the narrow streets of Lindos, a bar / restaurant with a panoramic view that offers fast food and typical Greek dishes at reasonable prices. If you want to taste good fresh fish you can try the Ktima Lindos, a very nice restaurant with a spectacular sea view, which in addition to excellent fresh fish offers Mediterranean, European and Greek cuisine.

So many great reasons to visit the acropolis of Lindos, and no reason to miss it!

Here you will breathe the true essence of the island of Rhodes!
