Especially in this case it is necessary to wear comfortable shoes and a hat that will shelter you from the sun, because here on the island of Rhodes it is always strong, especially in the central hours of the day.

The origin of his name is due to the English admiral Sir William Sidney Smith, who in 1802 fought against the fleet of Napoleon Bonaparte, giving orders from the top of the hill. Napoleon was so impressed by the audacity of this valiant Admiral, to quote him in his memoirs stating "This man has changed my destiny".

On Mount Smith it stood in the 3rd century BC the ancient Acropolis of the city of Rhodes, of which important remains are still preserved today. The Acropolis was at the time the most important place in the city, as it was fortified and used to house the most important and prestigious buildings.

Here you can admire the ruins of the Temple dedicated to Apollo Pythios, dating back to the 3rd century BC of which 3 columns are preserved, which have become the symbol of the island of Rhodes. In the northernmost part you will find the remains of a temple dedicated to Zeus and one dedicated to Athena Polias. You can also visit the Odeón, a classic Greek open-air theater containing 800 people, the ancient stadium, which is 201 meters long and part of the Gimnasium.

These ruins were brought to light and restored by the Italians, during their domination of the island of Rhodes from 1912 to 1943. We advise you to rely on an expert guide to better understand the importance of these ancient remains.

In addition to the beauty and historical and archaeological importance of the Acropolis, the natural beauty that can be enjoyed from the top of Mount Smith should not be underestimated. The panoramic view of the Old Town, the sea and even the coast of Turkey is an unforgettable sight. From here you can take the best photos of your vacation on the island of Rhodes.
