Port of Mandraki

Port of Mandraki

Have you ever heard of the Colossus of Rhodes? It is a famous legend that hovers over the Port of Mandraki. This rich and splendid port, located in the capital (Rhodes city), today has two columns at the entrance (coming from the sea) above which two bronze statues, in Italian style, by Elafos and Elafina, two deer that according to one legend freed the island of Rhodes from an invasion of snakes.

The legend of the Colossus of Rhodes tells of an attack by the soldiers of Egypt on the people of the island of Rhodes to conquer it, but without success. Following the victory of the Rhodians, the military equipment abandoned by the Egyptian invaders were resold. With that money they financed the construction of a huge statue in honor of the god Helios, protector of the island. Twelve years later a 32 meter high stone and bronze statue stood at the entrance to Mandraki Harbor. To date, the studies do not question the presence of the statue, but its location. In any case, after 67 years, a devastating earthquake brought her down. His pieces were resold many years later by the Arabs, to a Jew in Syria, and his traces were lost. Who knows what happened to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world!

Leaving aside the legend, the Port of Mandraki today is one of the most lively and lively areas of the island of Rhodes! Besides being one of the oldest ports in the history of Greece.
