Knights Street

Knights Street

The Knights Street is located in the medieval part of Rhodes town , between the Archaeological Museum  and the Palace of the Grand Master  and represents the heart of this ancient city.

It is a long paved road, built in the 14th century, which is overlooked by ancient noble palaces from the Ottoman period. Since 1988 the Knights Street is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, along with the entire old city of Rhodes.

The Knights Street owes its name to the numerous inns of the Knights of the Order of St. John, which once stood along this road. These structures were used as accommodation and refreshment point not only by the knights returning from the Crusades, but also by the pilgrims who came from the island of Rhodes to reach Jerusalem.

The ancient inns overlooking the Knights Street today host the consulates and offices of foreign embassies. The architecture of each facade reflects the style of the respective country. The Italian Embassy is on the right and is recognizable by the coat of arms with the Grand Master Fabrizio del Carrette's arms. The Palace of France, still located on the right, is marked with the noble weapon of the French royals. On the left is the Spanish Embassy, one of the largest, with a blazon of the Spanish nation on the outside.

These buildings rich in history, are kept in excellent condition, thanks to the Italian restoration in the 20th century.

Going through this ancient road it will seem like taking a step back in time and being catapulted into the 14th century. On the island of Rhodes a piece of the Middle Ages still perfectly intact awaits you.
