Firostefani

Firostefani is an ancient village, located at the highest point of the caldera, so it is also called the "roof" of the island of Santorini. Over the years it has been incorporated into the city of Fira (the capital), but still retains the charm and tranquility of a small village.

To get to Firostefani from the capital of the island of Santorini, it is necessary to take the scenic route in a northerly direction, towards Imerovigli and after a short walk of less than a kilometer, here is the village of Firostefani. Its name means "crown of Fira", in fact the two countries that were once very close, later ended up merging, creating a single picturesque succession of white houses, intricate alleyways and small churches.

Firostefani preserves some important historical and artistic testimonies of antiquity. Near the central square, located on the road coming from Fira, is the Church of Agios Gerasimos (San Gerasimo) surrounded by cypress trees and with the characteristic blue dome, like the numerous ecclesiastical buildings typical of the island of Santorini. Not far away is also the female monastery of Saint Nicholas, dating back to the mid-seventeenth century and dedicated to the three saints: Panteleimon, Zoodocos Pighi and Nicholas. Inside the church there is a beautiful Byzantine icon.

Do not miss a visit to the small church of the Virgin of Agios Theodoris, located in the "Frankika" district, inhabited mostly by Catholics (we remind you that in Greece most of the population is Orthodox). The building is characterized by a particular yellow facade and a bell tower with three bells. From the church, which dominates the ancient caldera, you can admire a truly unforgettable landscape. Nearby you can also visit the remains of two ancient windmills.

After so much walking and a little visit to the surroundings and the views, we suggest you stop for dinner in one of the many restaurants in Firostefani, all with fabulous and unique views perfect for watching the sunset. Like the Taverna Romantica, which offers dishes based on fish, Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, or the Kokkalo Fagopoteion which serves excellent meat dishes from traditional Greek cuisine.
