Sendoukia Tombs

Sendoukia Tombs

The Sendoukia tombs are located near the Monastery of Agios Efstathios, northwest of the island of Skopelos, on a plateau called Mount Karia, about 8 km from the capital.

These are three ancient rectangular tombs carved into the rock, about 2.5 meters long and partially covered by large slate slabs. The age of the tombs is not certain, but most of the studies attribute them to the Roman or early Christian era. Others speculate that it is an even older site, dating back to the Neolithic era.

At the end the effort of the climb will be rewarded by the magnificent view that will open before your eyes: blue sea as far as the eye can see until the islands of Alonissos and Euboea. An enchanting panorama that will give you unforgettable emotions.

Not far from the ancient tombs of Sendoukia is the Monastery of Agios Efstathios, which you can visit with a short walk along the slope. Mount Karia is also known for its pure water source.

If you love adventure and mystery, set off to discover this place full of charm and magic, you won't regret it!

The legend of Sendokia's tombs

The tombs of Sendoukia are also called "pirate tombs" because, according to legend, the pirate Barbarossa tried to sack the island of Skopelos, but its inhabitants managed to defend themselves and drive away the pirates from the island. The pirates who died in battle were buried in these ancient tombs, along with 12 cases of gold. This story that is true or not, increases the mystery and charm of this ancient burial site.

How to get to the Sendoukia tombs?

From the town of Skopelos drive along the road to Pirgos, which is located west of the capital.

Shortly after Pirgos follow the road to Sendoukia indicated by a sign.

The last part of the road is unpaved but will allow you to arrive by car near the forest. From here you will have to walk the forest path for about 15 minutes, marked with large red circles on the trees. The last part to reach the top of the hill is formed by large flat stones.

We advise you to wear comfortable shoes and bring at least one bottle of water with you, especially if you decide to take this route, during the hottest hours of the day.
