Blue Caves

Blue Caves

The Blue Caves are one of the most famous and suggestive natural beauties of the island of Zakynthos and ideal for a boat trip. They are located in the northeastern coast of the island, between the small port of Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari.

These beautiful caves owe their name to the amazing shades of blue that the water assumes thanks to the light of the sun that penetrates inside them and that changes nuances according to the times of the day. In fact, it is possible to admire an infinite variety of reflections that contrast with the white and rocky walls of the caves, giving each visitor a unique spectacle that leaves everyone speechless.

We advise you to visit the Blue Caves in the early morning, the ideal time to admire this wonderful show is in fact the sunrise. If you are an early riser, come and explore the unique colors of the Ionian Sea, you will see such a turquoise sea in very few other places in the world ..

Some of these cavities are quite large and can be accessed easily by boat, others are smaller and hidden, and can only be explored by swimming or with diving equipment. Given the depth of the waters around the caves, we recommend that you bring your snorkeling equipment with you, it will be an unforgettable experience. If you want to witness an even more suggestive phenomenon, come here to bathe in the evening, the water will fill with phosphorescent plankton, which will illuminate your bodies in the light of the moon.

How to get to the Blue Caves?

To reach the Blue Caves you have various options: you can rent a boat and set off to discover these wonders in full autonomy, or you can simply rely on one of the many local tour operators who organize day trips. Boat tours to visit the caves start from Makris Gialos beach, Aghios Nikolaos harbor and Cape Skinari.

It is also possible to reach this enchanting place by land. Driving along the road from Agios Nikolaos to Capo Skinari you will find a small mill about halfway. Here, once you park your car, you will have to go down a hundred steps and you will find yourself directly on the coast close to the Blue Caves. Here the rocks are smooth and you can dive into the immense blue of the Ionian Sea and swim to the nearby caves.

What to visit around the Blue Caves?

If you have rented a boat, we advise you to stop at the nearby Xighia beach and then continue to Capo Skinari, in the far north of the island of Zakynthos. Do not miss the spectacular Keri Caves, accessible only by sea.
