A refreshing delight to be enjoyed in the long and hot Greek summers. And to think that the Greek milkshake was born by chance ..

The history of the Greek milkshake

The discovery of the Greek milkshake happened accidentally in 1957, during the Thessaloniki International Fair. Mr. Dimitrios Vakondios (this is the name of the "inventor" of the Greek milkshake) who used to use instant coffee, not having hot water available at the fair, he thought of using cold water to prepare his usual coffee. So it was that using the shaker to mix instant coffee with cold water, he prepared the first coffee milkshake in history!

Here's how to prepare this exceptional iced drink!

Ingredients for the Greek milkshake

2 teaspoons of instant coffee
2 teaspoons of sugar
½ glass of milk
½ glass of cold water
3 - 4 ice cubes

Preparation of the Greek milkshake

Pour the coffee and sugar into the shaker. If you don't have a shaker you can use a thermos.

Add a small amount of water, until the sugar and coffee are covered.

Pour the ice cubes into the shaker and close it carefully with the lid before shaking it. Shake the ingredients until you get a soft foam.

Pour the drink into a large glass, add milk and water and other ice cubes if you want it even colder!

Your Greek milkshake is ready! Refreshing, right?

Our advice

For a creamier consistency, use whole milk.
As an alternative to the shaker you can use a blender, so you won't even have to struggle to shake ..
