Falasarna beach

Fine white sand, wide beach both in width (150 meters) and in length (over 1 km), crystal clear waters, rich fauna and extraordinary beauty; this is what you will find at Falasarna beach.

The Falasarna beach is part of the Natura 2000 protected area, it is particularly famous for the characteristics mentioned above and is the most loved on the west coast of Crete.

Let's start immediately with what for many is the only sore point: it is often exposed to the north winds, in fact surfers prefer it for the waves that are created (in the open sea). And for those who do not practice water sports of this kind, it could be the only reason why one might hesitate to visit it. But trust us if we tell you that, despite the dreaded gusts, this place is exceptional and you cannot remove it from the list of things not to be missed in Crete just for fear of the annoying wind ... also because sometimes, instead, with great surprise you find a flat sea and absolute calm, to be the envy of the more famous Elafonissi and Balos.

How do you reach Falasarna beach?
Falasarna beach is located 59 km from Chania, heading west, and can be reached by car (which you have certainly already rented from the airport), taking the new road to Kissamos, then follow the signs for Platanos and then left the main road, descend through a narrower road and turn right until you reach sea level. Reaching it is therefore really easy and simply following the signs of the road signs you arrive: if you can help, keep in mind that Chania serves an hour, from Agia Marina 45 minutes and from Kissamos only 20 minutes. Once you arrive you will have at your disposal a large parking lot where you can leave your car or scooter, located right next to the beach. Along the road, before the beach, there are a couple of small shops, restaurants and bars where you can take a short break before sitting under the umbrella.

Is Falasarna beach equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas?
In Falasarna beach you can find sun beds and umbrellas to relax and two bars to eat or drink during the day. The average cost is € 6 per day (in line with the other beaches on the island of Crete). These two bars also organize fantastic evening beach parties where young people and fun lovers can go wild! In other words, it comes in the morning and it starts again only after a super beach party!

Does Falasarna beach also have a free beach?
As we mentioned above, the beach of Falasarna is very wide and there is space for everyone. For those who want the free beach, you will be spoiled for choice. On the other hand, in the free beach areas there are fewer and fewer tourists so if you are looking for relaxation: you are in the right place! Yes, because Falassarna also enjoys a certain fame, due to its wonderful beaches and magnificent views, so consequently it is a bit crowded, especially during the high season. Certainly, however, it will never reach the levels of Balos and Elafonissi, the busiest ever.

What to visit in Falasarna besides the beach?
For lovers of historic ruins and ancient fortifications in the hinterland there is an old port from the Hellenistic period. You may wonder why this port is located inland, the reason is very simple: about 1500 years ago the western part of Crete rose and Falasarna found itself at nine meters above sea level, leaving the port dry and buried . This is why the port is nowhere to be found where it is expected to be, or directly on the sea.

If you look at Falasarna from above you can see some greenhouses that dominate the coast, due to the very fertile soil of that particular area. Indeed it does not seem a very attractive scenario, but it is enough to turn your gaze from the opposite side to remain in awe!
Are you already dreaming with your eyes open? You do well! In Falasarna you will leave your heart and we are sure that during your stay in Crete, at least you will come back a couple of times ... at least ...!
