Lefkada Town (the Capital)

Lefkada City is located on the north coast just 20 minutes from the Preveza area and has been the capital of the island of Lefkada since 1684.
Only 8000 people live in the capital of Lefkada whose main activities are agriculture and tourism which has flourished in recent years, thanks to the beauty of an island that until a few years ago was much less Italian.
Once in Lefkada City you will immediately notice that the architecture is very different from the classic white and blue houses.
The reason? In 1948 and 1953 the island was shaken by violent earthquakes that forced the inhabitants to rebuild their conditions and churches with little money left (after the war), trying to make everything as anti-seismic as possible.
Lefkada City is the closest point to the mainland and connected by a long bridge and here the main commercial and administrative activities take place in the city, as well as being one of the best equipped marinas in the Ionian Sea with over 600 berths.

What can I visit in Lefkada City and its surroundings?

We are in the middle of a cosmopolitan city that wants to make itself known and to be appreciated by all its visitors, maintaining the gentle slowness and genuineness that has always characterized the less touristy and more conservative Greek islands of the most genuine traditions.
The main square of the city around which the life of its inhabitants and tourists revolves in the summer, takes its name from the church of the Holy Spirit which dates back as most of the churches present, to the period of the eighteenth century, such as those of San Nicola and San Dimitri. Inside they are finely decorated and fully contain the religious spirit that has remained unchanged over time.
Do not miss the ancient monastery of Moni Faneromenis which stands with a panoramic view of the city and the lagoon, located a few kilometers north and the center of religious life on the island of Lefkada, as well as pilgrimages throughout the year. Founded in the seventeenth century on the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis and restored several times, especially after a violent fire that enveloped it in the second half of the nineteenth century, it is today a fundamental stop for tourists who choose Lefkada as a holiday destination every summer .
Another unmissable stop is the fortress of Agia Mavra which carried out its defensive function against the Turks for 400 years from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. The construction of the Fortress dates back to the end of the 1200s and given its importance it is still one of the destinations chosen by visitors, now considered part of the history of Lefkada.
The city of Lefkada also encompasses the Lagoon, an important natural area protected by the Natura 2000 network where it is possible to practice bird watching, observing the various species of birds such as Eurasian coots, small herons, great cormorants, wild ducks, swans and riders black-winged. A good reason to stay in touch with nature! Near the city there is no lack of beaches lapped by crystal clear waters such as the beaches of Kastro, Myloi and Ai Giannis, where it is also possible to practice Kite Surfing for sports lovers. And if during the day you will all be intent on discovering the beauties of this city and all that is next to it, in the evening you cannot miss a nice walk admiring the sea and sipping good wine in one of the many cafes and taverns that illuminate the coast ..and if you are a shopping lover, continue to Ioannou Mela Street, an entirely pedestrian street teeming with characteristic little shops, ready to intrigue you! All you have to do is leave to discover this city which, thanks to its authenticity, will be able to be appreciated in every little corner!
