Vathy (the capital)

Vathi is the capital of the island of Samos and is located in the northeastern part of the island. It is a beautiful city that has 9000 inhabitants and also serves as a marina, one of the three most important on the island, in fact, visitors who reach Samos by sea disembark here.

A walk through the streets of Vathi

Once you get here you can take a ride on the seafront and admire the main street of the capital, full of shops and clubs. Vathi is very lively and full of services, bars, restaurants and accommodation. In fact, although the main attractions are historical-artistic, nightlife is not lacking.

Continuing on this road you can also stop to observe the old district, called Ano Vathi and built on a hill from which the ancient district dominates the sea, here is located the important Archaeological Museum and there are countless alleys within which to get lost and drink a coffee, made strictly according to the ancient tradition, using only simple saucepans. You will seem to have been catapulted into a 19th century village ...

Do you think that its inhabitants are still used to call Samos "Vathi" that is the old name of the island and it will not be a coincidence for you to find only men on the streets of the small capital. It was once thought that drinking coffee and playing cards was a right only for men and many inhabitants of old Vathi still think so today.

You can observe the characteristic colored two-storey houses, enriched by well-kept gardens, stone stairs and wooden doors. All with the classic Anatolian style. This neighborhood and modern buildings together create a beautiful picture where ancient and modern mix together and offer spectacular scenery.

You could also fall in love with the numerous pebbly beaches, equipped and with an incredibly transparent turquoise sea, or with the church of Agios Spyridon, which we remember being also patron of the island of Corfu. The Byzantine Museum and the Town Hall are also beautiful.

Vathi is a beautiful location with a thousand attractions, all to be explored. And the most surprising thing is that, although the area is quite popular and touristy, the prices are much lower than the average; therefore in the end Vathi is within everyone's reach. With its amphitheater construction within the narrow gulf and its marked liveliness Vathi is an absolutely not to be missed destination and perfect for those who love magical and suggestive places.

The archaeological museum of Vathi

How to miss the Archaeological Museum, where you can admire wonderful works of great historical importance such as: the Giovinetto di Kouros, which with its 4.75 meters puts in awe anyone who looks at it. Or the Korè, the twin of the work exhibited at the Louvre. You can also admire the collection of vases, cauldrons and icons of Perseus and Minerva.

Here you can find the finds found in Heraion and Pythagoreion, the two main archaeological sites on the island of Samos. In short, you can observe many suggestive works witnessing the history that made Vathi what we see today. If you want to visit it, you can find it behind the municipal garden.

Vathi you can't miss it, indeed it should be the first destination of your holiday on the island of Samos. With its mixed scenario, in which it is not clear whether everything concerning the ancient prevails or the modern side with the buildings and structures of today, such as bars, shops and much more. Visiting it is like getting on a time machine that goes back and forth between yesterday and today. A spectacular journey through time in one small and amazing town!
