Pythagorion village

The village of Pythagorion is located on the southern coast of the island of Samos and overlooks the picturesque Gulf of Tigani, from which it took its name in the past. From 1955 the village took the name of the famous mathematician Pythagoras, born in the nearby city of Vathi.

Pythagorion is located near Samos airport and is therefore very easy to reach. Visit it as soon as you arrive on the island .. you will not regret it!

The beach

The small and peaceful beach of Pythagorion offers two sun beds and an umbrella for 6 euros and a beach bar for maximum relaxation. A short distance away is the beautiful Potokaki beach, larger and with a fairytale sea. Just behind the beach of Potokaki you will find the Poros Sea Side, a typical Greek tavern, which offers exquisite traditional and Mediterranean cuisine.

What to see in Pythagorion

Walking through the picturesque streets of the Pythagorion you will find Odos Lykourgou Logothti, the main street of the village that reaches the port, where there is the greatest concentration of shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs and hotels.

The picturesque port, where the emblematic statue of Pythagoras is located, is the first artificial port built in the Mediterranean, where today luxury yachts and numerous boats dock that reach the nearby islands of Samiopoula, Agathonissi and Patmos. There are many excursions that leave from the port of Pythagorion, for example to the city of Ephesus in Turkey, or to the magnificent coasts of Samos, up to touch the beaches of Tsopela, Kako Rema, Kiriakou and Asproskavos.

The treasures of Pythagorion are not yet finished ... The village of Pythagorion in fact, besides being a renowned tourist resort, is also an important archaeological site, since it was built on the remains of the ancient city, dating back to the times of Polycrates, which ruled Samos from 537 to 522 BC

Near Pythagorion is the most important archaeological site on the island of Samos, Ireo, which boasts the glorious Heraion, the temple dedicated to the goddess Era, included by UNESCO among the monuments of the World Heritage Site. According to Greek mythology, the island of Samos gave birth to the goddess Hera, the wife of Zeus, for this reason, in the geometric period, this majestic temple was built in his honor. It was a dipteric ionic temple with 115 huge columns, considered the largest temple in Greece at the time. A paved road 4 meters wide and adorned with statues connected the sanctuary with the city of Pythagorion. Unfortunately, only one column remains of the imposing Heraion, which stands for about half of the original height.

Other important testimonies of the history of the ancient city of Samos are the Via Sacra and the Great Altar, which are located, like the temple of Era, in the archaeological site of Ireo. The votive offerings found along the Via Sacra are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Samos. These include the Statuary Group of the sculptor Geneleos and the colossal Kouros. The latter was one of the 5 or 6 sculptures that adorned the north side of the Via Sacra.

If you are fond of ancient history there are many archaeological sites to visit in the area, including the Aqueduct of Eupaline, the Castle of Likourgos, the thermal baths and the temple of Aphrodite.
